Winter is one of the harder seasons for garden wildlife. Natural food becomes scarce, cold weakens smaller animals quickly, and many species rely on undisturbed shelter to see them through to spring rather than active foraging.

Shelter matters as much as food. A quiet, shaded corner away from foot traffic and pets, ideally backed onto a hedge or shrub border, is the right spot for a dedicated shelter. Gardeners setting one up for the first time often start by browsing hedgehog houses to see the range of designs suited to different garden sizes.

A garden pond, even a small one, is one of the most valuable additions for wildlife. Frogs and newts use it to breed, dragonflies and damselflies lay eggs in it, and birds and hedgehogs will drink and bathe at the edges given the chance.

Bringing these elements together tends to work best gradually, adding one or two features at a time. A useful starting point is a browse through [https://haderslevwiki.dk/index.php/Insect_Houses:_Giving_Solitary_Bees_And_Beetles_Shelter wildlife garden products] friendly garden products UK gardeners have found practical for exactly this kind of layout.

Access is usually the first barrier. Solid fencing and walled boundaries cut a garden off from the wider network a hedgehog relies on. A gap roughly the size of a CD case cut at the base of a fence panel, sometimes called a hedgehog highway, lets them pass between neighbouring gardens without needing to cross open roads or driveways.

Garden birds face different pressures depending on the time of year, and supplementary feeding is most valuable during two periods in particular: the late winter to early spring hungry gap, when natural food is scarce, and the breeding season, when adults are feeding hungry chicks.
